A319:
VH-VHD began its Summer Season operating flights to McMurdo, carrying AAD personnel, ferrying expeditioners from USAP and assisting the Italian program.
The A319 then positioned in Auckland at the end of November for the start of the U2 “360 degree” tour of Australia, which extended until mid-December 2010.
The A319 crew are also preparing for the two upcoming Captain’s Choice tours of India in early March 2011 and possibly a charter to China soon after.
C212:
Both VHA & VHB commenced the 2010–2011 Antarctic flying season on 7th November 2010. The initial schedule being delayed due to the tragic loss of four French expeditioners at Dumont D’Urville.
Heavy ski landing on sastrugi at Bunger Hills resulted in damage to the skin and landing gear of VHB.
A considerable amount of engineering resources has been focused on returning the aircraft to a standard of airworthiness appropriate for its return ferry flight to mainland Australia.
A CAR35 engineer from AEA has been an integral part of this team ensuring sign-off on site when the repairs are complete. Once back in Melbourne, Skytraders engineers will undertake a comprehensive rebuild of the damaged area.
