As a result of the introduction of the Airbus 319ACJ the company is the first to have ever operated a twin-engine commercial airliner into Antarctica. Skytraders Airbus is able to depart Hobart and fly directly to Wilkins in a little over four hours. The fast sector time means an enhanced likelihood of arrival before closure of any weather window. The long-range tankage means that on arrival overhead the runway a decision can be made not to land and the aircraft can return directly to Tasmania with no concern regarding fuel requirement. There is therefore no requirement for an alternate runway or for fuel to be stored and transferred in the fragile Antarctic environment. The Skytraders system is faster, more reliable, less expensive and most of all safer than any other.
