Antarctic Domestic Services

Skytraders' two CASA 212-400s are the backbone of Skytraders Antarctic Aviation solution. From October to March these planes provide domestic services within Antarctica. The aircraft are at the leading-edge of cold climate science in Antarctica, providing scientist access to remote locations or providing a viewing platform for aerial survey of wildlife or ice topography.

The CASA 212 also provides a reliable air-link between both Australian and International Stations.

Skytraders skis for the C212 were the first that had been developed for a transport category aircraft in more than 40 years. The design and engineering was completed here in Australia and the Supplementary Type Certification issued by the Civil Aviation Authority of Australia. Skytraders sees this as essential IP to hold both Australia and Skytraders at the forefront of cold climate aviation and world’s best practice.

Skytraders missions to remote locations require operations onto virgin terrain. This in turn necessitates extensive assessment and crews are given appropriate competency based training. The outcome is a process which starts to teach them the methodology essential for assessment of suitability of aircraft and terrain for any proposed operation. Extensive risk analyses and job safety plans are an integral part of Skytraders operations as safety is paramount in this challenging environment.

Throughout the period the C212 aircraft are located in Antarctica they are accompanied by their own engineers. Skytraders has a full maintenance organization and personnel qualified across all categories to support these activities.
